Step-by-Step Client & Mod Setup
Follow these sequential steps in order. Once the three official archives have been installed, drop the Hordes of Azeroth launcher into your game folder to complete setup.
Download All Three Archives & Verify Integrity
Save WoW-1.0.1.3989-enUS.iso, WoW-1.12.0-enUS-patch.exe, and WoW-1.12.0-to-1.12.1-enUS-patch.exe into a dedicated staging folder on your PC (e.g., Downloads\WoW_Setup).
To verify that downloads finished without corruption, open Windows PowerShell in that folder and run:

Mount the Base ISO & Install World of Warcraft
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, double-click or right-click WoW-1.0.1.3989-enUS.iso and choose Mount. This will open a virtual DVD drive. (Alternatively, extract the ISO using 7-Zip or WinRAR).
Open the virtual drive and double-click Installer.exe (or Setup.exe).
Recommended Destination Path: Install into a clean directory such as C:\Games\WoW-1.12.1 or D:\WoW-1.12.1. Avoid installing inside C:\Program Files (x86) to prevent Windows User Account Control (UAC) permission headaches when patching.
When installation finishes, click Close / Exit. Do NOT click Play or start the game yet.
Apply the 1.12.0 Cumulative Patch
Locate the downloaded WoW-1.12.0-enUS-patch.exe and double-click to run it.

Extract or copy HoALauncher.exe directly into the root directory of your newly patched World of Warcraft installation (the exact same folder where WoW.exe is located).
Right-click HoALauncher.exe and select Run as Administrator.

Troubleshooting & Important Tips
⚠ Never Run Retail Updaters
Do NOT launch Blizzard's modern Battle.net desktop app or allow old background Blizzard auto-updaters to run inside this folder. Doing so will overwrite files to an unsupported modern WoW version and break mod compatibility.
🛡 Antivirus & Windows Defender
Because HoALauncher.exe bundles a local mangos server emulator and listens on local loopback sockets (127.0.0.1), heuristic antivirus scanners may flag it as an unknown utility. Add your WoW directory as an exclusion in Windows Defender.
📁 Pure ASCII Folder Directory
Make sure the entire folder path contains only standard English letters, numbers, and dashes (e.g., C:\Games\WoW1121). Avoid folder paths with special characters, symbols, or Asian characters, which can cause legacy 1.12.1 binary crashes.
⚙ Run as Administrator
Always right-click HoALauncher.exe and choose Run as Administrator. The launcher requires write privileges to write extracted MPQ archives, local save states, and temporary database caches.
🖥 Modern Resolution & DirectX 9
WoW 1.12.1 is a DirectX 9 application. If the game crashes on modern high-DPI or multiple-monitor setups, open WTF\Config.wtf and add SET gxWindow "1" and SET gxMaximize "1" to run in borderless windowed mode.
