Hordes of Azeroth is an unofficial, non-commercial fan-created open-source project. Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. did not make this project, has not endorsed or sponsored it, and has no part in it.
1. Trademark Attributions
World of Warcraft, Warcraft, and Blizzard Entertainment are trademarks or registered trademarks of Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. in the U.S. and/or other countries. All other trademarks, trade names, or logos referenced herein belong to their respective owners.
2. Distribution of Game Assets & Fair Use
Nothing in the Hordes of Azeroth repository, binary releases, or website contains or distributes proprietary game assets owned by Blizzard Entertainment. This includes, without limitation:
- No 3D character or creature models
- No proprietary textures or UI art assets from the original client
- No original sound effects or voice lines
- No terrain data or MPQ archive packages
The game runs on our custom build of benilla, an independent client that parses game data locally from a copy of World of Warcraft 1.12.1 (build 5875) supplied by the player. The launcher builds monster pathfinding data on the player's computer. Everything located under Interface/ in this repository is original code written for this project.
3. Open Source Licenses
The code of Hordes of Azeroth is released as free and open-source software under the GNU General Public License v3.0 (GPL-3.0).
This project incorporates or links against several other open-source projects, each governed by its own respective license:
- benilla (Client): Dual-licensed under MIT and Apache-2.0.
- VMaNGOS (Server core fork): Licensed under GNU GPL-2.0.
- MariaDB Server: Licensed under GNU GPL-2.0.
- Barlow Font: Licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

4. Non-Commercial Nature
Hordes of Azeroth is completely free of charge. We do not sell subscriptions, cosmetic items, virtual currency, or software licenses. We do not accept donations or charge for access. Any website or entity charging for access to Hordes of Azeroth is fraudulent and unauthorized.
